The most dangerous thing about a power outage isn’t the dark — it’s what people do to fight it. Every year, outages kill not from the loss of power itself, but from generators dragged into garages, grills fired up in carports, and gas ovens left on for heat. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless; you will not smell it, see it, or taste it before it drops you. The instinct to bring the heat or power source a little closer — just for convenience, just for tonight — is the instinct that ends lives.
Everything else in this guide is practical and important. But if you walk away with one thing, make it this: the fire you’re fighting isn’t the outage. It’s the improvised fix.
Carbon Monoxide: The Outage Killer Nobody Talks About
Keep this rule absolute: no generator, grill, camp stove, or any device that burns gasoline, propane, or charcoal goes indoors. Not in the basement. Not in the garage — not even with the door open. Not in a carport, crawlspace, or under an overhang. The only safe place is outdoors, and outdoors means at least 20 feet from any window, door, or vent.
The people who die from CO poisoning during outages aren’t running generators in their living rooms. They’re running them in the garage with the door cracked, or right outside a basement window. It feels ventilated. Human judgment about “enough air” is unreliable — the 20-foot rule exists because that judgment has killed people.
The same mechanism applies to your gas oven. A sealed house in winter is exactly the wrong environment to run an oven as a heat source. CO accumulates quietly, and by the time anyone feels sick, the levels are already dangerous. This feels like a kitchen appliance doing kitchen work. It isn’t.
What actually saves lives here is hardware, not judgment:
- Install working CO alarms on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas — before the outage happens.
- If an alarm sounds during an outage, get everyone to fresh air immediately. Don’t investigate first.
- Let a generator cool completely before refueling — fuel hitting hot engine parts can ignite.
- Keep the generator dry; a wet generator is a shock hazard on top of the CO risk.
The CO alarm is not a backup plan. It’s the only warning system you have, because the gas itself gives you none.
Lighting Without a Fire Risk
While we’re talking about improvised heat and light: don’t use candles. The fire risk during outages — when people are moving around in the dark, leaving rooms quickly, and sleeping in unusual arrangements — is real enough that every major safety organization calls them out specifically. Flashlights and battery-powered lanterns do the same job with none of the hazard. Stock them before you need them, along with spare batteries.
Your Food Window Is Shorter Than You Think — If You Keep Opening the Door
The numbers here are clear and consistent across government and Red Cross guidance: an unopened refrigerator holds food safe for about 4 hours. A full freezer holds for about 48 hours; a half-full freezer for about 24 hours.
But those figures carry a load-bearing condition: the door stays closed. Every time you open the fridge to check on something, you bleed cold air and reset the clock. The 4-hour window isn’t a hard shelf-life — it’s a measure of how long the box holds temperature when treated like a cooler.
The actual spoilage test isn’t how cold the food feels. It’s temperature and time: if perishable food has been at or above 40°F for 2 hours or more, discard it — regardless of how it looks, smells, or feels. Food can cross that threshold while still feeling cool to the touch. “Seems fine” isn’t a safe standard here.
Two things worth keeping in the freezer before storm season:
- A thermometer. When power comes back, you need to know whether the freezer actually held temperature — not guess.
- A full freezer. Mass holds cold. If your freezer is half-empty, fill the gaps with containers of water. A full freezer gives you 48 hours of protection; half-full cuts that to 24.
If the freezer held and food still has ice crystals and is at or below 40°F, it can be refrozen. Ice crystals are the test — not “it’s still cold.”
What to Do With Downed Power Lines
Treat every downed line as live. A line that isn’t sparking is not necessarily dead — you have no way to know, and the consequences of being wrong are fatal.
The obvious rules: don’t touch the line, don’t move debris near it, don’t drive over it. But here’s what most people don’t know: the hazard extends to everything the line might be touching or near — fences, trees, standing water, buildings. Current travels. Keep your distance from all of it.
If a line falls on your car, stay inside. The car’s rubber insulates you from ground; stepping out breaks that protection. Call for help and wait. The only exception is fire — if you have to exit, do it the counterintuitive way: jump clear without touching the car and ground simultaneously, land with both feet together, then shuffle away keeping your feet together the whole time. This sounds strange until you understand why: the ground around a downed line carries a voltage gradient. If one foot is ahead of the other — or one foot is still on the car — the difference in potential between those two contact points can complete a circuit through your body. Normal walking can electrocute you here. The shuffle keeps both feet at the same voltage.
Water and Food: 72 Hours Is a Floor, Not a Ceiling
One gallon of water per person per day is the consistent standard across all major guidance. That’s the baseline — and it goes up for pets, infants, hot climates, or anyone with elevated medical needs.
The supply duration guidance splits by scenario, and the split matters:
- 72 hours (3 days) is the minimum — designed for evacuation kits and short disruptions.
- 2 weeks is the shelter-in-place target for extended home outages.
The “72-hour kit” framing can create false confidence. Major storms routinely knock out power for longer than 3 days — treat the 72-hour standard as the starting point for what to have on hand, not the finish line. Stock non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food on the same timeline.
Medications get their own timeline: a 7-day supply is the guidance for drugs you take regularly.
Refrigerated Medications Deserve a Closer Look
The general rule is to discard refrigerated medications if the power has been out for more than a day — unless the label specifically says otherwise. Two separate sources give the same guidance with the same caveat, so the rule itself is solid.
But “discard after a day” isn’t absolute, and mechanically following it can be harmful in the other direction. If you depend on a critical or hard-to-replace medication, check the label first — some drugs have more temperature tolerance than the default rule implies — and call a pharmacist before discarding something that’s difficult or slow to replace. The risk of being without the medication may outweigh the spoilage risk. This is one case where the cautious-sounding choice (throw it out) isn’t automatically the safest one.
Putting It Together Before the Next Outage
Most outage preparation is straightforward logistics — water, food, flashlights, a thermometer in the freezer, medications stocked. None of that is hard. The hard part is the thing that feels like a solution in the moment: pulling the generator a little closer, cracking the garage door, turning on the oven to take the edge off. Those instincts are the actual threat. The CO alarm on your wall and the 20-foot rule in your head are what stand between a manageable inconvenience and a disaster that started with good intentions.
