The instinct makes complete sense: crack a window, open the garage door, point a fan at the exhaust. You’re letting the bad air out. Except that’s not how this works, and the gap between what feels safe and what actually is safe is where people die. A portable generator doesn’t produce a little CO that ventilation can manage — it produces an overwhelming amount, fast enough that “partially open” spaces aren’t a middle ground. They’re a death trap with better lighting.
This guide covers where generators and backup heaters can actually run, why your CO alarm might be silently useless during the exact outage that creates the hazard, what CO poisoning looks like before it’s too late to act on, and what to do when the alarm goes off. Get these right and an outage is an inconvenience. Get them wrong and the generator you bought for safety becomes the danger.
The Garage-Door-Open Problem — and the Real Rule
The 20-foot rule is the rule: at least 20 feet from your home, and from any window, door, or vent that could pull exhaust back inside. That’s not a comfort margin — it’s the minimum. One set of public-safety guidelines puts it at 15 feet from windows and doors specifically, but since that’s measuring from a different reference point, use the larger number and apply it to the structure and its openings both.
What the rule doesn’t say loudly enough is this: distance alone doesn’t save you if you haven’t also dealt with what’s around the generator. CO is heavier than most people assume and behaves erratically with wind. Exhaust can drift back through an open window even from 20 feet away if the wind is pushing it. The setback is necessary, not sufficient.
The bigger failure mode, though, is what people call “partially enclosed.” A garage with the door rolled all the way up feels like outdoors. A carport feels like outdoors. An overhang, a breezeway, a porch — all feel like outdoors. None of them are. CO accumulates in those spaces faster than it disperses, and at concentrations that can be lethal in minutes. The rule isn’t “ventilated space.” It’s “outdoors, with genuine open sky and distance from any opening into the building.” There is no indoor generator placement that is made safe by opening doors or windows. That’s not a weak form of the rule — it’s the whole rule.
Why Ventilation Can’t Save You
The reason the garage-door instinct fails isn’t intuitive until you understand the output scale. Government sources describe a single portable generator as producing dramatically more CO than a car — the kind of difference that makes “open a window” laughable as a response, not merely inadequate. One state’s guidelines describe improper indoor or semi-enclosed placement as raising CO poisoning risk by something like 300-fold compared to correct outdoor use. These are directional figures from public-health agencies, not laboratory measurements, so treat them as magnitude estimates rather than precise data points — but the magnitude is the point. You’re not dealing with a small hazard you can engineer around with airflow.
Two properties of CO make the ventilation strategy especially treacherous:
- It’s odorless. There’s no sensory warning that levels are climbing. You won’t smell anything wrong until you’re already symptomatic, and by then your judgment is compromised.
- It lingers. CO can build up quickly and then persist for hours after the equipment is shut off. Stepping outside briefly, then coming back in, doesn’t reset the situation — the gas is still there.
Both of these properties mean the feedback loop that normally protects people (you notice something’s wrong, you leave) is broken. By the time there’s a signal, it may be too late to act on it reliably.
Knowing CO Poisoning When You’re In It
CO poisoning has a tell that’s easy to miss in the moment: it looks exactly like the flu, except there’s no fever. Headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and drowsiness, weakness, chest tightness, confusion — these are the early signs. At higher concentrations, the progression moves to unconsciousness, coma, and death. At very high levels, that progression can happen within minutes.
The practical pattern to recognize: multiple people — or pets — feeling sick at the same time, who improve when they go outside. A household flu doesn’t work that way. If that pattern appears, treat it as CO until proven otherwise.
Sleeping occupants are the highest-risk group, for an obvious reason: you won’t act on symptoms you can’t feel. This is why CO alarms are not optional equipment — they’re the only thing standing between sleeping people and a hazard that gives no other warning.
If your alarm goes off, or if you suspect CO exposure: get everyone out immediately, leave the door open on your way out, call 911 from outside, and don’t go back in until emergency responders say it’s clear. Your CO Alarm Might Not Be Working Right Now
Here’s the specific problem with CO alarms during a power outage: the outage that creates the generator hazard is the same event that disables a poorly maintained alarm.
Battery-only alarms keep monitoring through an outage without issue. The trouble is plug-in AC alarms — the kind that lives in a wall outlet. These typically include a backup battery, and the manufacturers are correct that the mechanism works: if the backup battery is live, the alarm keeps running when grid power drops. But if that battery is dead or missing, the alarm goes silent at exactly the moment you’re most likely to need it. It won’t show an obvious error. It will simply be off.
There’s a second failure mode that no alarm manufacturer has much incentive to advertise: the sensor itself expires. CO alarms have a finite lifespan — commonly around 7 to 10 years — after which the sensing element stops detecting CO reliably, regardless of whether the unit powers on and beeps when you test it. An alarm that’s past its end-of-life replacement date isn’t protecting anyone, even if it has a fresh battery and shows no fault indication. Check the manufacture date on the back of your alarm. If it’s past its rated lifespan, replace the whole unit.
The manufacturer’s recommendation that their alarms have battery backup is accurate. It’s also a manufacturer talking about their own product. The underlying principle — no working battery plus no grid power equals no protection — is what matters, and it applies to every brand.
Where Alarms Go and How to Keep Them Working
Placement and maintenance guidance is consistent across public-safety sources, so this part is straightforward:
- Install on every level of the home, including basements if occupied.
- Place near or outside every sleeping area. A single alarm in the hallway is not enough if bedrooms are far from it.
- Test monthly. Most alarms have a test button — use it.
- Replace alkaline batteries at least twice a year. The spring and fall clock changes are a common reminder; twice a year is the more conservative interval and the one worth keeping.
- Consider 10-year sealed lithium units to eliminate the battery-swap problem — but don’t let “sealed” become “forgotten.” The whole unit still expires and needs replacement at end of life.
The Kerosene Heater Exception — and Why It Doesn’t Apply to Generators
Fuel-burning backup heaters — kerosene units being the most common — are a different category from generators, and the ventilation guidance is genuinely different. For an approved kerosene heater, running it with a window open at least an inch, or with doors to other rooms open, is the guidance. Use only K-1 grade fuel; other grades burn dirtier and produce more CO.
State this explicitly here because the risk of cross-contamination is real: someone who reads “crack a window for the kerosene heater” might extend that logic to generators. Do not. These rules don’t transfer. Generators require full outdoor placement, 20 feet from the structure, no exceptions. The kerosene heater advice applies narrowly to small approved heaters used as directed, and even then, ventilation is a mitigation, not a solution — a CO alarm is still required.

The One Rule That Covers Most of This
If you remember nothing else: combustion equipment belongs outside, completely outside, with real sky overhead and 20 feet of distance from every opening in your home. Not in the garage. Not under the carport. Not in the breezeway with the door open. Outside. A CO alarm on every level with a working battery is your second line of defense — not your first, and definitely not your only one.
